The Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding has planned to initiate a series of congress for geneticists of India to be held once every five years. The aim of the congress is to create a platform where the geneticists of India can reflect on the progress made in genetics & allied fields, new & anticipated challenges and, exchange ideas for the use of genetics for agriculture and, sustain & conserve the natural resources and the environment. Researchers from any field of genetics dealing with any organisms will be welcome to contribute their knowledge for agriculture.
The greatest benefit from genetics that the country and the world have got so far has been through the varieties of cereals and many other crops, animal & fish breeds. This has been most spectacular during the ‘Green Revolution’ era and later. But the modern agriculture based primarily on these varieties have brought in its wake the problems of destruction of the agro-eco system and non sustainability aggravated by the emerging challenges of climate change.
It is imperative now that we have a deep look at how best we can use genetics for a productive, nature friendly and sustainable agriculture even in changed climatic situation. An associated problem is the rampant malnutrition of specially the children of the developing world for whom the major source of nutrition is the crop products. It is essential that it may bring shift in agricultural research paradigm from productivity and nutrition. Thus the society has chosen ‘Genetics for sustainable agriculture and nutrition’ as the theme for the 1st National Congress of Genetics.
